Teague High School Athletic Director/Head Football Coach Daniel Johnson was relieved of duties following the Teague School Board?s acceptance of his letter of resignation during their regularly scheduled meeting held Thursday evening, March 27th.
T.I.S.D. Superintendent Dr. Nate Carman reports that T.H.S. Principal Donnie Osborn has been appointed Interim Athletic Director for the time being. ?The plan is to have a new Athletic Director begin work on May 1st,? said Dr. Carman. ?Since the position was posted on our website, we?ve already received 30-plus applications.?
Johnson?s sudden resignation came as a surprise to school officials and a request for a copy of the letter of resignation was denied by Dr. Carman, stating it fell under the district?s confidentially policy. Dr. Carman referred back to the confidentially policy when asked whether any grievances or threats of litigation had been filed against Coach Johnson or the school district.
The former Athletic Director worked for two years at Teague High School and compiled a football record of 15 ? 8. He is the third Head Coach the TISD has had since 15-year veteran Head Coach Kevin Hayes? contract was not renewed.
Dr. Carman and school administrators will begin the interview process for a new Athletic Director/Head Coach the week of April 14th and interview the top three candidates for a second time on April 21st. The final candidate will be announced to the school board on April 24th with hopes of meeting their approval so he can begin work on May 1st. ?It?s our intention to put a quality coach and quality person in that role,? added Dr. Carman.
Johnson?s resignation could shake up the current coaching staff at T.H.S. due to the fact the new Athletic Director will be afforded the opportunity to bring a few key coaches with him. Dr. Carman concluded that the coaches at the high school will be determined between the high school principal and new athletic director.
