Longtime Teague resident, Billy Burns, has a quick wit, a big smile, and never met a stranger. He loves to socialize as well as help people. Mr. Burns is a member of the Westside Church of Christ in Teague. He loves to play dominos, fish, and he delivered Meals on Wheels for a long time for the Teague and Butler Senior Services. He also helped seniors get to doctor appointments, grocery shop, pick-up their prescriptions, took them to and from the senior centers, etc. He is also a life member of the NAACP.
Billy was born on December 29, 1936 and raised in Freestone County. He attended Dogan High School in Fairfield. He quit high school in the 11th grade and went to work in Dallas where he also earned his GED.
In 1955 Billy became Pvt. Burns, United States Army, Infantry. He left Texas and went to Fort Ord, California and then on to Washington State at Fort Lewis. Following Washington he was stationed in Alaska where he spent most of his enlistment working in Rifleman Training. He was sent back home and then to Louisiana where he was honorably discharged in 1957 as a Corporal.
It wasn?t too long after he returned home that he began seeing Joycie Jones ?We knew each other all our lives but our relationship changed when I returned from the service,? said Billy. ?I took her out for a 25 cent hamburger, laughed Billy.? ?You could get a hamburger for 25 cents then.?
Billy was working for Teague Brick and Tile Company after he completed his service and was there for 12 years. He then worked for the Fairfield Highway Department for 25 years and retired in 1995.
Billy and Joycie were married in 1958 and moved to Teague. ?We first lived on what we called ?the branch,? a housing development in the area. The house was very small and after living there for some time we had two children and one on the way,? said Billy. In 1963 A.G. Sartor was selling a two-room house and Billy and Joycie bought it. ?He was such a nice man,? said Billy. They made the small house work for the family until they could add on and get some more room. Their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren still love coming home to that same house.
Billy and Joycie have four children: Bobby W. Burns and wife Stephanie. Bobby is a Registered Nurse and is Nurse Manager over the medical departments at the TDCJ Boyd Unit at Teague and Coffield Unit at Tennessee Colony. James L. Burns and wife Angela. James is an Engineer for Exxon Mobile and is working overseas presently in Egypt. Kathryn Burns Love has a BS degree from Northern Texas State University and is a homemaker. Patricia Burns Simon received her degree from Northern Texas State University and at this time is enjoying being a grandmother. Billy and Joycie have ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Billy Burns has been an asset to Freestone County, the Teague Community and to the service of his country. He is one of the people who make Teague a great place to live.
