Elections Lack Candidates
EIGHTY-NINE KIDS FROM Teague Junior High School competed in the District UIL Meet held February 3rd at Riesel and January 29th at Teague, and came away the 2013-2014 UIL District Champions. Sandy Blackwood was the Coordinator and Nicole Sifford was Assistant Coordinator for Teague. “I’ve never worked with a better group of kids,” said Blackwood. As of Monday, February 24, Teague Mayor Earnest G. Pack was the only candidate to file his intentions for re-election in the May 10 City Council election which also calls for two council positions to be filled. Deadline to file for office is Friday, February 28th.
No one has filed for the other two openings; Alderman Place 1, held by Greg Johnson and Alderman Place 3, held by Marie Hertenberger. A special election was held late last year to fill the two positions due to the resignations of David Huffman and Garlan Steed earlier in the year. Mr. Johnson and Ms. Hertenberger were elected to serve out the remainder of the two terms. Aldermen positions that will come open for election next year are presently held by Ron Rasbeary, Chris Nickleberry, and Marilyn Michaud.
City Council members are elected to two-year terms.
In the Teague ISD Board of Trustees election, voters will be asked to fill two positions on the school board currently held by Lovie Whyte and Stan Waldrip. Mr. Waldrip is running unopposed and Ms. Whyte is being challenged by Jeff Clark. School board members not included in this election are President Jeff Gonzales, Vice President Debra Lawrence, Brian Bowers, Sushma Walker, and Brett Meyers.
School Board member serve three-year terms.
City council and school board positions with terms expiring in both Fairfield and Wortham will also be filled during the upcoming May 10th elections.
The Fairfield City Council will hold an election with three positions to be filled. Incumbents Mayor Roy W. Hill; Joe Kirgan, Place 1; and Randy Johnson Place 2, were all running unopposed as of Monday afternoon. Others on the Fairfield City Council are Linda York, Place 3; Jerry Don Sanders, Place 4; Kenneth Hughes, Place 5.
The Fairfield Independent School District has two openings on the school board, which are both unopposed at this time. Seeking reelection are John Fryer and Kevin Benedict. The remaining members of the board are President Blake Robinson, Vice President Tracie Ezell, Secretary Eric Chavers, LaCharles Bass and Kim Whitaker.
If the Fairfield city and school board candidates remain unopposed there will be no elections.
There are three places open on the Wortham City Council and no one has filed for them. The places are presently being held by Trey Hall, Kelly Calame, and Jeff Carr. Other council members are Mayor Rodney Price, Cliff Nesmith, and Mindy McGlone.
The Wortham ISD has three openings held by Tadd Dunnahoe, James Sessions, and Jeff Jones. At this time only Dunnahoe and Sessions have filed.
