Annual Food For Families Food Drive is Friday
The annual Food For Families Food Drive will be held from 7:00 a.m. ? 5:00 p.m. this Friday, November 22, 2013, in nine Central Texas counties including Freestone County.
Locally, residents may drop off their food and/or monetary donations at the Lord?s Community Storehouse, 402 Main Street in Teague. ?The day is supposed to be cold and rainy, said the food pantry?s president, Ross Provost, but we hope the people of Teague won?t let the weather stop them from helping us stock the storehouse and help people who are in need have a good Thanksgiving.?
Food For Families is a coalition of food pantries across Central Texas who have banded together to collect non-perishable food in a one-day coordinated drive on the Friday before Thanksgiving. All food donated stays in the county in which it was collected to serve the people in need in that county. ?The Lord?s Community Storehouse is a more independent food pantry and all food coming into Teague stays in Teague to help the people right here in our city,? said Provost.
The Lord?s Community Storehouse volunteers will be on hand Friday collecting, weighing and sorting the thousands of pounds that are expected to be dropped off during the day by the good folks in the Teague area. If the weather permits there will be volunteers at the intersection of 4th Avenue and Main Street to receive donated items.
In the month of October 2013, The Lord?s Community Storehouse fed 383 families. That is an average total of 1,007 people. Due to a change in the Food Stamp program in 2010 and implemented on November 1st of this year, there will be many more families that will depend on the food pantry. ?We are so fortunate to have wonderful people in Teague who always dig deep and keep the Lord?s Community Storehouse going,? says Provost. ?It?s unbelievable and we are so thankful.?
All pantries participating in Food For Families are members in good standing of ?Feeding America,? the largest network of food banks and food pantries in the United States. Food For Families is operated by four partner organizations, Longhorn Council of Boy Scouts of America, H.E.B. Grocery Company, Texas Army National Guard and KWTX Media.
Donations for the Lord?s Community Storehouse include: canned meats (tuna, chili, stew, chicken, etc.), canned vegetables, cereals, baby food, peanut butter, dry beans, rice, flour, sugar, corn meal, pasta, sauces.
Because it is a food pantry, monetary donations can be turned into lots of pounds of food because it can be bought at a lesser price than at regular food stores. So these donations are very valuable as well as food donations. Anyone needing to speak to the Lord?s Community Storehouse president, Ross Provost, he can be reached at 254-739-5058.
