Thoughts About The Good Book

Did you hear the story about the family that had invited their preacher over for lunch after the morning Sunday service? After a few niceties had been said about the meal, the mother of the family, trying to impress the preacher,?said to her young daughter, ?Honey, go and get the book that mother likes to read so much and bring it here to the table.? The little girl left for a few minutes and then returned with the ?Ladies Home Journal? magazine!
?? Well, that?s not the book that I want to talk about. I want to talk about the Bible. You know, the book that means: Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth! The B-I-B-L-E. How?s that song go? ?Yes, that?s the Book for me. I stand alone upon the?Word of God, the B-I-B-L-E!? (How?s that for childhood Sunday School memory?) The Psalmist has said, ?Thy Word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against Thee?, because the Bible is ?a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.? (Ps. 119:11, 105) Let me illustrate that point by telling you about a friend of mine who was in the Boy Scouts when he was young. One night on a camp-out, he couldn?t sleep so he got up and did what he wasn?t supposed to do. He wandered away from their camp-site. He told a group of us that it was really dark that night and he was trying to make his way via the moon light. Well, it got so dark in one spot that he finally turned on his flash light, and to his horror and amazement, he found himself standing at the edge of a very steep cliff! One more step and he would have, well, you know. He was sure glad that he had his flashlight and had decided to turn it on!
? That?s what the Bible does for us. It shines a light on the pathway in front of us and shows us the way we are going. Try that some night the next time you are out in the woods. Shine your flashlight on the pathway in front of you and you will avoid a lot of trouble as you walk.
?? The Apostle Paul also told us a few good things about the Bible. He said in 2 Timothy 2:15, ?Be diligent to present yourself approved unto God, a workman who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.? He also said in 2 Timothy 3:16,17, that ?All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.? In other words, read the Bible and let its words get your life straight so that you can know its teachings and even lead others to do likewise.
?? Now let me tell you another story about an Arizona cowboy whose life was straightened out by the Word of God. A Christian worker in a bookstore tells his story. This cowboy came into his bookstore one day looking like a pretty rough and tumble, fierce kind of fellow. Know what I mean? He said to the book seller, ?I?m looking for copies of Mark?s Gospel.? The?salesman at the cash register swallowed a little hard and asked why? The cowboy told him his story. He said, ?I had gone to San Francisco to gamble and throw as much of my money around that I could. I stayed in a swanky hotel and the first night fell asleep after pulling a good drunk. The next morning I awoke and there by my bed was a Gospel of Mark. I took one look at it and angrily threw it on the floor. I did the same thing the next morning. But on the third morning, when I saw that same little book, I took it with me to a near-by park and began reading it. In fact, I spent all day reading it. I heard the Son of God say to a leper, ?Be thou clean.? I heard him say to a paralytic, ?Thy sins be forgiven thee.? I heard him commend the widow for her mite. I saw him take little children in his arms and bless them. I heard him say to his disciples, ?Could?st thou not watch for one hour?? Then I saw him die. It broke my heart and changed my life. Because of this little Gospel, the Gospel of Mark, I?m?a?different man, and that, stranger, is why I want some copies of the Gospel of Mark. I want to give them away to other people who also need to hear its story.?
?? If that?s not following the words of Paul, then I don?t know what is.?How about?you and I doing what this cowboy did and?take the words of this Good Book called the Bible, and share it with those around us who need to hear its story?
