Single Vehicle Accident Claims Life, Injures Three
TEAGUE VOLUNTEER FIREMEN managed to save Cookie’s Place from burning down completely after answering the call at approximately 4 a.m. on Thursday morning, May 16th. The new eating establishment was scheduled to have a ribbon-cutting ceremony later that afternoon. The cause of the fire is believed to have come from a refrigerator in the kitchen. The restaurant is located in the West Town Mall on Hwy. 84 West. Two other businesses attached to the restaurant, EOAC and Good Neighbors Cleaners, received smoke damage. A Houston woman died and another woman and her children were injured in a Thursday afternoon, May 16th crash on Interstate 45 near Fairfield.
According to Department of Public Safety reports the accident occurred at about 4 p.m. Thursday, May 16th when a 2005 Ford F-150 pick up truck was driving northbound on Interstate 45 about 4 miles south of Fairfield when the driver lost control, left the roadway and overturned.
McLennan County Justice of the Peace Christi DeCluitt pronounced Shirley Miller, 45, of Houston, dead at about 8:30 p.m. at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Cente in Waco, where she was taken after the crash.
The driver of the pick up, Samantha Costello, 23, of Katy, suffered what Trooper Patrick called serious injuries and also was taken to Hillcrest.
Her children, Daisy Costello, 8, and Matty Costello, 3, of Houston, both were taken to Hillcrest and were reportedly in good condition Friday morning.
Samantha Costello was wearing a seat belt and the others were not, according to reports.
The southbound lanes of I-45 between mile markers 193 and 194 where the accident occurred were shut donw for several hours while emergency personnel worked the accident.
Vehicles heading south were directed to take exit 197 in Fairfield and stay on the service road to avoid the accident.
Investigating officer was Freestone County Department of Public Safety Trooper Jeremiah Patrick.
