11 Lady Lions Named To All-District Basketball Team

After a historic season that saw the Teague Lady Lions win 27 games including a 12-0 district mark, it was only fitting that the Coach Taylor Sims? squad would dominate the 2013 23-AA All-District Team as selected by the district?s coaches.

All 11 players on the Lady Lions 2012-13 team were named to the elite list including senior Kyera Abram as the district?s MVP while the other four starters, senior Haley Guerrero, junior NiCosha Nelms and sophomores Caitlyn Collins and Alie Watson, were voted First Team All-District.

In addition, Head Coach Taylor Sims was a unanimous choice as 23-AA Coach of the Year by his peers after leading Teague to its most wins ever in a season and its first ever undefeated district ledger. The Lady Lions were consistently ranked in the Top 15 of both girls basketball polls all season long.

Also from Teague, junior Kenya Busby and sophomore Danielle McWilliams were voted Second Team All-District while seniors Kali Crowhurst and Sibyl Burrell, junior Kirby Cooper and sophomore Abbey Hurst were named Honorable Mention All-District.

While being named MVP, Abram averaged 16.5 points per game and 12 rebounds per outing while Guerrero (11.5 ppg) and Nelms (10 ppg) also averaged in double figures in scoring this season. Guerrero also averaged almost four steals and four assists per game while Nelms collected 10 rebounds per game.

While directing the Teague offense this season at the point guard position, Collins averaged nearly eight points and six assists per outing this season while Watson scored at a 6.3 clip while dishing out three assists and collecting two steals per game.

For Abram, it was the fourth straight year for her to be selected to the All-District squad in some capacity while Guerrero and Nelms were named for the third year in a row.

Buffalo freshman Maci Hoffman (#25) was voted Offensive Player of the Year while Marlin junior Tayla Taylor (#32) was selected Defensive Player of the Year. Co-Newcomers of the Year were Mildred freshman Madison Moore (#13) and Riesel freshman Savanna Martinez (#44).

Perhaps just as impressive as being recognized for their play on the hardcourt this season is that all 11 Teague players on the 2012-13 team were also named to the 23-AA Academic All-District Team for their work in the classroom.

In the UIL Girls Basketball Playoffs this season, Teague drew a bye in the Bi-District round before defeating Academy 38-36 in an Area playoff game. The Lady Lions were then dispatched from the playoffs in a 61-33 Regional Quarterfinals loss to Crawford.

District 23-AA Runner-up Buffalo defeated New Waverly 67-38 in the Bi-District round before being eliminated in a 59-32 Area loss to Jarrell while Third Place Corsicana Mildred lost 83-56 to Franklin in a Bi-District matchup.
