Filings Are Slow In Local Elections
Deadline Is March 1
Citizens wishing to run for local city council or school board positions can file for office through Friday, March 1, 2013, to have their names on the ballot for the Saturday, May 11 elections.
City council members are elected to two-year terms and school board members are elected to three-year terms. Packets to run for office can be picked up by prospective candidates during normal business hours at Teague City Hall and at the Teague ISD Administration Office.
Throwing their hats into the political arena in Teague so far are Place 2 Alderman Marie Hertenberger, who was recently appointed to fill the unexpired term of Mark Hargis on the City Council and Brian Bowers and Jeff Gonzales, Places 2 and 4, respectively, on the TISD Board of Trustees.
Three seats on the Teague City Council will be filled by City of Teague voters this year and include Place 2, held by Hertenberger; Place 4, held by Chris Nickleberry; and Place 5, held by Terry Gibson. Council members with terms expiring in 2014 include Alderman Place 3, Garland Steed; and Mayor Earnest G. Pack. Place 1 is currently vacant due to the recent resignation of David Huffman.
In the Teague ISD Board of Trustees election, voters will be asked to fill two positions on the school board currently held by Bowers and Gonzales. School Board members with terms expiring in 2014 include Lovie Whyte, Place 1; and Stan Waldrip, Place 3. School board members with terms expiring in 2015 include Randy Bruce, Place 5; Debra Lawrence, Place 6; and Sushma Walker, Place 7.
The last day for a write-in candidate to declare their intentions to run for office is March 1st. Early voting by personal appearance in the May 11th elections will run April 29 - May 7.
City council and school board members with terms expiring in both Fairfield and Wortham will also be filled during the upcoming May 11 elections.
