Lions JV Team Continues To Win

The Junior Varsity Teague Lions basketball team continued their winning ways last week again winning both district games they played. On Monday January, 21st the Lions faced off with Blooming Grove who proved to be a formidable opponent. Teague got off to a slow start in the first quarter. ?We did not play well at all in the first half, and at the same time you have to give them credit they executed and converted the opportunities we provided them? stated Coach Sheldon Moor. The Lions only made two field goals and a free throw in the first quarter while Blooming Grove tallied 13 points in the quarter. ?Our defense was what caused us problems the first half, we didn?t stop them very often and in turn we didn?t get the quick easy buckets in transition that we are used to getting? stated Coach Shaun Moore. At the end of the first the Lions trailed 13-5. In the second Teague started to turn the tide as the defense picked up. Teague scored 14 second quarter points while only giving up 7. This made the score 20-19 at the half with Teague trailing Blooming Grove.

The Lions came roaring out of the locker room in the third quarter with a scoring outburst of 18 points, ?but as always the key was the defense? stated Coach Moor. ?We finally came out determined to not let somebody just dribble by us and get straight to the bucket? said Coach Moor. The tighter defense led to the run out buckets that the Lions have thrived off of all season and after three quarters Teague had a ten point lead 37-27. In the final stanza both teams seemed to trade a bucket for a bucket or a stop for a stop. Then with a minute and a half left in the game Teague took possession of the ball and did a great job of running the clock out. ?We did an excellent job there at the end taking care of the ball and simply playing keep away? said Shaun Moore. When the final buzzer sounded Teague had won the game 47-37. Michael Hudson had a game high 19 points while Mikkail Shepherd scored 9, Dobbis Carter added 8, Kei?vontray Brooks dropped in 6, Zacchaeus Bell had 3, and Justin Fowler contributed 2.

On Friday January, 25th the Lions hosted the Eagle of Corsicana Mildred. Corsicana was the lone district opponent left that the Teague J.V. had not faced yet but the results were the same for the Lions as they finished with another victory. ?They are a very good team with a bunch of shooters and they pushed us the whole game, but games like these are good for a team in the long run. We are trying to prepare to be the best Varsity team we can be, our goal is not to be an undefeated J.V. team we want to be good when all these boys are playing Varsity? stated Coach Moor.

The Lions started quickly with great on ball pressure that created turnovers leading to fast break points. In the first quarter five different Lions scored the teams 16 points while Mildred could only muster up 8 points for their selves. In the second quarter both teams struggled shooting the ball and the game became a defensive stale mate. At the half Teague led 22-17. In the third quarter Teague hung their hat on defense and allowed the Eagles to score only six more points. ?We strive to allow eight or fewer points per quarter and we have been getting better at reaching that goal every quarter? said Coach Moor. In the final stanza the Lions managed to put the game away by making free throws and controlling the ball to eat away at the clock in the final few minutes of regulation. When it was all said and done Teague had defeated Mildred by the score of 44-35. Leading the Lions in scoring was Dobbis Carter with 12, followed by Bell with 9, Hudson added 8, Jamal Keener pitched in 5, Justin Fowler tallied 4, while Major Burrell, Mikkail Shepherd, and Kei?vontray Brooks all had 2. The win was also helped by the efforts of A.J. Estrada, Kent Bonner, Jonathan Roberts, and Jacob Lewis.
