Teague Lions Are Victors Over Bisons, 64-39
On Tuesday, Jan. 15, the Teague Lions traveled down I-45 to play the Bison of Buffalo. The Lions came back up I-45 with a 64-39 victory. The game was close for three quarters of play, until the Lion defense came alive in the 4th quarter. Teague outscored Buffalo 21-4 in the final period of play.
Leading the charge was Daryl Brooks with 23 points, 13 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist, and 1 block shot. Lane Scruggs had a break out game defensively; he finished with 10 points, 10 steals, 5 assists, and 7 rebounds. Trae Bell, chairman of the boards, had 13 points and 13 rebounds. Jordan Maggard also had 13 points, 4 steals, and 4 assists. John Love added 3 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Xavier Dixon came off the bench and chipped in 2 points. "I told our kids this was a statement game, that we needed to make a statement on defense," said Coach Patrick. After halftime the Lions made a few adjustments defensively and came out and held Buffalo to 13 points in the second half. Coach Patrick said he was super proud of his team?s effort in the second half.
Teague 94 Rice 47
On Friday, Jan. 21, the Lions hosted the visiting Rice Bulldogs. The Lions ran away from the Bulldogs straight out the gate in route to an outstanding 94-47 district win. ?I felt it was our first complete game, offensively and defensively,? said Coach Patrick. Every Lion player scored and every Lion player got a steal in the game. Coach Patrick use to coach with Rice Head Coach Phillip Eddins in Clarksville, so he had some extra motivation in wanting to win. The Lions were just simply motivated to stay in the district race, and they came out roaring against Rice.
Lane Scruggs led the way with 21 points, 9 assists, 6 steals, and 4 rebounds. Jordan Maggard had his best scoring game with 18 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Daryl Brooks had 16 points, 12 rebounds (10 offensively), and 4 assists. Trae Bell added 13 points, 11 rebounds (10 offensively), 5 steals, and a block shot. John Love chipped in 5 points, 5 steals, 3 rebounds, and 1 assist. Coming of the bench, Austin Skinner led all with 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals. Dustin West had 3 points, 2 steals, and 1 assist. Damian Jones had 3 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 steals. Xavier Dixon came in wowing the crowd with his defense and ball handling, he finished with 2 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, and 4 steals. Seth Strader chipped in 2 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 assist. Clayton Davis had 2 points and a steal. Thomas Hamilton rounded out the scoring with 1 point, 1 assist, 1 rebound, and 1 steal.
The Lions had 34 steals and 35 offensive rebounds in the contest. Coach Patrick stated that he tell the players all the time, that he can tell who won the game by looking at which team won the war in rebounding, who made their free throws, and who had the least turnovers.
?We're gelling together at the right time and we're also winning the games we're suppose to win, stated Trae Bell. Lane Scruggs stated that they have six games (2nd round of district play) left to play and they are all big games.
Right now Teague is tied for 2nd place in the District with Blooming Grove. The Lions play Blooming Grove Tuesday Jan. 22, and then Corsicana Mildred comes to town on Friday Jan. 25.
