Lady Lions JV Starts Season 6-0

TEAGUE - Picking up where they left off last season but with a bit of a different cast, the Teague Lady Lions Junior Varsity A-Team basketball team has raced out to a 6-0 start to begin the 2012-13 campaign.

A year after finishing 17-6 and clinching the District 14-2A JV title with a sterling 11-1 mark, the Lady Lions have started this new season by defeating Italy, Kemp, Troy and Corsicana while also picking up two victories in round robin play in the Annual Teague Junior Varsity tournament.

Due to the number of players this year, the Junior Varsity has been divided into two squads, the A-Team under the direction of Coach Melissa Padgett and the B-Team which is coached by Christina Blake. The B-Team is playing an abbreviated schedule while the A-Team?s slate nearly mirrors the Varsity Girls schedule.

After a scrimmage at Mart on Tuesday, November 6, the A-Team opened the season with a 31-14 win on the road at Palestine on Saturday, November 10. Hope Scales led all scorers with 13 points with Jasmine McQuirter adding nine followed by Shelby Lafoy (6 points) and Hannah Matchett (3) while Kari Snelding and Kayla Wagoner also contributed to the victory.

Next action for the JV A-Team came at home on Tuesday, November 13 when it posted a 37-23 win over Kemp after holding a narrow 24-21 advantage going into the fourth quarter.

Scales led Teague with 13 points while Lafoy and Matchett each had eight points with McQuirter adding six and Snelding rounding out the scoring with two points while Wagoner also saw action in the win over Lady Yellowjackets.

The Lady Lions improved to 3-0 with a narrow 18-17 home win over Troy on Friday, November 16. After a slow first half, Teague trailed 10-3 at the break before rallying in the third and fourth quarters by outscoring their guests 15-7 to take the one-point victory.

The Lady Lions got 12 points from Scales and three apiece from McQuirter and Matchett while Lafoy, Snelding and Wagoner also played key roles in the victory for Teague.

Due to the football team?s playoff game on Thursday, November 15, the JV Tourney scheduled to begin that day was changed to a single day round robin format on Saturday, November 17. The A-Team picked up two more wins during Saturday?s play to improve to 5-0 on the year.

Teague?s latest victory came on Tuesday, November 19 on the road at Corsicana when the Lady Lions came away with a 38-28 win over the Lady Tigers.

Teague led 8-7 after one quarter before going up 21-12 at halftime. The final two quarters saw the Lady Lions outscore their hosts 17-16 to post the 10-point win.

Teague was led in scoring by Scales with 12 points while Matchett was also in double figures with 10 points followed by Lafoy with nine, McQuirter (4 points) and Abbey Hurst (3) while Snelding and Wagoner also saw action in the team?s sixth win of the young season.
