11/29/2012 by Rev. Alan Van Hooser
Project Christmas Kids began around 1990 as a project of the Friendship Circle of the First United Methodist Church.? It was originally called the ?Needy Kid?s Project?.? The name was changed a few years ago.? The focus is on the younger school-aged kids that often get missed.? In 2011, the project spent over $10000 on over 80 children and help out with some emergency needs around Easter also.?
Over the years the project expanded beyond the church and became a community wide project.? The Friendship Circle has always had member from other congregations.? Teague Elementary, Teague Intermediate, and Dew elementary all participate with transportation, donations and volunteers.? Many people from all over the community along with local industries provide the money and people who make the project possible.?
The children are nominated by teachers and taken shopping with adult and High School Senior volunteers.? These volunteers guide their young folks as they select their gifts.? The first items are always a coat, clothes and other necessities.? Then each child can choose a toy or other fun item that they want.?
You can participate in Project Christmas Kids in two ways.? First, through financial contributions.? These can be made at the First United Methodist Church office or mailed to PO Box 240, attention: Project Christmas Kids, Teague Texas 75860.? The second is to donate your time to encourage these young people.? Shopping dates will be in Mid-December and specific details will be announced soon.? Call 254-739-2095 for questions or to sign up for the shopping days.?
