Believed To Be The 2nd Lion Team To Ever Go Undefeated In District
Thursday, February 16, 2012
VARSITY LION LANDON LANCASTER #11, passed the ball to team mate Jordan Maggard (center) for an easy bucket in action last Friday against Malakoff. The Lions went undefeated in district play and will advance to area competition on February 24 in Buffalo.
"When the season started these young men made a pack that they would dedicate themselves to this season and since then good things have been happening," said Varsity Lion Basketball Coach Marvin Childs, about his undefeated District Champion Varsity Lion basketball team.
The 12-0 Lions are believed to be the first Lion team in school history to go undefeated in any sport and are the first Lion team since the 1970's to win an outright District Championship in basketball.
"This group of kids play extremely well as a unit, notes the six-year head coach. "They go out there and get after you. They've made their minds up that this is what they want to do."
It seems the new powerhouse Lion basketball program has a lot to look forward to in the future, with the Junior Varsity winning the District Championship with a 11-1 record and both the 7th and 8th grade teams winning their District tournaments.
With the District Championship and a first round bye in hand, the Lions are waiting for the outcome of games in District 15 and 16 on February 14th to determine who they might play in Area competition February 23-25. "We know that we'll play one of four teams, which include Italy or Whitney from District 15 or Franklin or Hearne from District 16 after they meet in Bi-District action either Monday or Tuesday of next week," said Childs. The Lions will play a tune-up game at 7 p.m. at home this Friday against either Mexia or Crockett.
Coach Childs expressed his thanks to the dedicated Lion fans that have supported them this season. Information about the Area play-off game will be published...
